International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Commemorated
The Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the Kingdom of Spain commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with the screening of the documentary A Leap into the Void, based on a real case of vicarious violence.
The diplomatic entity organized a discussion panel with experts on non-violence, in collaboration with the Attorney General's Office (PGR), the General Consulate of the Dominican Republic in Madrid, the Institute for Dominicans Abroad (Index), the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), and the Timeart Foundation, on November 21st.
The event, which took place in the SEGIB conference room, began with remarks from Ramón Burgos, minister counselor and chargé d'affaires of the Embassy, who, on behalf of Ambassador Juan Bolívar Díaz, welcomed the attendees. During his speech, Burgos recalled the struggle of the sisters Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal, political activists assassinated on November 25, 1960, a date that, 40 years later, the UN recognized worldwide in their honor.
He stated that "this International Day invites reflection on the urgent need to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms" and called for "assuming collective responsibility and committing to a world free of violence for future generations of women and girls," according to a press release.
Ambassador Lorena Larios, Secretary of Cooperation at SEGIB, then spoke, thanking the Dominican Republic for having decided to present this important event at their headquarters, as the 25th anniversary of the declaration of 25N was being celebrated in the coming days, a date that marks a transcendental milestone in the fight against violence toward women. Larios indicated that "the commitment of Ibero-American States is aimed at achieving the development of an inclusive, democratic, and sustainable Ibero-America, which will only be possible with the equal participation of all women in their diversity."
